Private View & Talk by the Artist Camille Baker on making and inspiration for the INTER/her project
INTER/her is an immersive installation and Virtual Reality artwork, focussed on the reproductive diseases that women, and those with a female reproductive systems, face after 30 years of age, such as: endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, Ovarian and other cysts, as well as more severe cervical, ovarian, uterine and endometrial cancers.
The sensory and emotional journey moves visitors from the outside in within a real space or "Sitting Womb", into VR space, with a spatialised audio soundscape featuring the voices and stories of women recounting their experiences, making it an intimate, emotional and possibly haunting experience.
The experience is made embodied by an accompanying vibration belt or "haptic corset" that provides visceral and responsive sensation on the lower abdomen, in the approximate locations where the various diseases occur inside the body.
INTER/her has been shortlisted for the 2021 Lumen Prize -3D/Interactive Award https://www.lumenprize.com/2021-3d/interactive-shortlist
