App available to download on 6/11
Join the launch of the Pioneer (Daddy longlegs) to experience augmented Victorian engineering from 1896 on your phone. Using the geo-tagged features of the new free smartphone app when walking close to the original route it will trigger it to reappear out at sea.
‘Pioneer’ (2021) is an ambitious, outdoor, augmented reality artwork that explores urgent contemporary themes around innovation, hubris and technology elitism through a reflection on Victorian engineering. The work juxtaposes Victorian engineer Magnus Volk’s ‘Daddy Long Legs’ (1896-1901), a unique Brighton seagoing electric train on stilts, with contemporary mobile technologies such as AR, 5G and SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network.
To activate the experience please install the free app ‘Pioneer AR’ from Google Play or Apple iTunes App Store. Stand on the seafront near the start of The Pioneer’s journey at ‘Banjo Groyne’ in Kemptown on the main promenade opposite Paston Place facing the sea. You can also view the postcard trigger through your smartphone’s camera using the app wherever you are (headphones are advised).
We will meet in the 'Village square' of The Marina, seeing it where it once passed as this site hadn’t been built during its existence. The walk will be approx. 1.3 miles each way along the undercliff path observing the tracks if low tide permits visibility. We will return towards Brighton with a pause for refreshments at The Daddy Longlegs pub in Kemptown.
